Announcing a "Hydrogen Training Center"
We kicked this off with a one hour Hydrogen Basics class on October 24, 2024. This was a class that educated attendees on Hydrogen, the gas and fuel, how it is made and how it is used safely. It also shared information on global status, prices and the great career, funding and business opportunities that are unfolding! Expert instructor Walt Pyle and support instructor Dr. Hari Lamba conducted the class. We will follow up with classes on all aspects of hydrogen! WHY HYDROGEN?
Zero Air Pollution
Hydrogen is sought after because it provides zero pollution locally and thus helps improved local air quality. When used in fuel cells it only emits water. When burned in air, it does produce nitrogen oxides as air contains both nitrogen and oxygen.
Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions
If hydrogen is produced using a renewable energy like solar, wind or geothermal and using the electrolysis of water, then it results in zero greenhouse emissions when produced.
The Hydrogen Picture Today
Hydrogen is currently made using natural gas, coal and oil. As of 2017 the world was using about 70 million metric tons of hydrogen annually, with a market of $155 billion and resulting in 830 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions (more than the greenhouse gas emissions of Germany). It is mostly used for oil refining, making ammonia (for fertilizer) and for making methanol.
Can Hydrogen Help Solve Climate Change?
Yes!! The issue with most renewable energy except geothermal is its intermittency. The sun does not shine all the time, solar energy is reduced during cloudy weather and the wind does not blow all the time. But less than 1% of the world’s land area worth of solar panels can produce ALL of the whole world’s energy. So, it’s a question of storage. If hydrogen can be used to store vast commercial quantities of solar energy, then it can result in zero emissions energy use.
